As the global healthcare industry continues to boom, Quality assurance (QA) professionals are becoming increasingly crucial in ensuring patient safety and the efficacy of medical treatments. Today, we spotlight Nyaah Fidelis, a successful quality assurance graduate whose journey from pharmacist to QA officer is inspiring and insightful.
Early Inspirations
Nyaah’s journey into quality assurance began with his experiences as a practicing pharmacist in Nigeria and Cameroon. During his time as a pharmacist, he observed the devastating effects caused by poor-quality medicines, which led to treatment failures and even deaths. This stark reality fueled his passion for QA, driving him to ensure that medicines in the market are of good quality and effective for patient care.
His educational journey started with pharmacy training, which provided significant insights into quality assurance, good manufacturing practices, and quality control procedures. While practicing in Cameroon, he attended numerous seminars and short courses on QA, eventually leading to his appointment as a WHO focal person for reporting counterfeit and substandard medicines.
Upon moving to the USA, Nyaah advanced his career through the NeuAge Institute’s Quality Assurance training program. This program enriched him with the knowledge required to be a QA officer in the pharmaceutical and biomedical technology industries.

Training Experience During Quality Assurance Training
Practical experience during his Quality Assurance training played a vital role in shaping Nyaah’s understanding of QA. During his QA training program, the project work exposed him to root cause analysis and the importance of corrective and preventive actions. Additionally, studying regulatory requirements from Health Canada, the FDA, and other global bodies gave him insights into QA’s critical role in ensuring product safety.
Technology has significantly shaped Nyaah’s approach to quality assurance. He notes that generating quality data with integrity is vital for QA. Modern technologies, including ICT and AI, are indispensable for ensuring data integrity throughout the production process. Nyaah has seen how these tools are integral to maintaining high standards in QA systems.
Challenges Faced
Quality assurance is fraught with challenges, especially in healthcare settings. Nyaah recounts a particularly challenging experience as a QA officer for an African faith-based drug supply organization.
He was responsible for auditing manufacturers and suppliers to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. One of the greatest challenges was declaring a batch that needed to meet standards, which led to batch rejection. To address this, he conducted thorough investigations to ensure confidence in his results and declarations.
A significant achievement in Nyaah’s career was during the COVID-19 pandemic when he and his team uncovered fake chloroquine tablets used in treatment centers. Using simple thin-layer chromatography techniques, they discovered that some tablets contained no active ingredients, while others contained incorrect active pharmaceutical ingredients. This work was pivotal in ensuring patient safety during a critical time.

Key Learnings
From his time in QA, Nyaah has learned several important lessons. As a QA officer, meticulousness is key, and constantly upgrading one’s knowledge through regular Quality Assurance courses is crucial. Understanding that the role may not always be popular among other units in the production plant is important, but it is essential for maintaining quality standards.
Nyaah’s advice to aspiring QA professionals to embrace the role’s challenges and responsibilities. QA is interesting but challenging, and knowing that your actions are vital in ensuring safe medicines and medical devices in healthcare can be very fulfilling. He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and staying updated with the latest trends and technologies in QA.
Looking ahead, Nyaah sees QA playing an increasingly vital role in healthcare. Patient safety is pivotal, and QA ensures that medical devices and medications are safe. Emerging trends like modern technologies and AI will enhance QA services.
